Physical Description of the Great Dane

Physical Characteristics:
- Great Danes have a short coat that should be thick and glossy
- Their head is long and rectangular with a square jaw and deep muzzle
- Ears can either be left natural or cropped and are a medium size
- Eyes should be dark, of a medium size and deep set
- They have a long, muscular arched neck and a short level back
- Body is well muscled but smooth rather then bulky
- Their deep chest is particularly evident due to a well defined tuck up
- Great Danes have long powerful limbs and large rounded feet
- The long tail should be set high on the body but never so that its carried over the level of the back
Both the American and Canadian Kennel club agree on the above physical characteristics of the Great Dane. Overall this breed should appear to be very powerful and well balanced and posses a smooth gait with long strides. Great Danes are referred to as the Apollo of dogs because of their imposing yet regal appearance.
